Topic: “The Verbal Morphology of Hobyot: Archaism and Linguistic Change”
Hobyot, a Semitic language spoken by a small number of speakers in eastern Yemen and southern Oman, is classified by UNESCO as “severely endangered.” This study explores Hobyot’s verbal morphology, not as a static entity but as a dynamic system shaped by evolutionary trends. It also offers insights into linguistic changes in other SaM languages (Mehri and Jibbali/Shehri) and the influence of contact between Hobyot dialects and these languages.
