Archeology Conference by Dr Anaïs Marrast -Teaching and Research Associate
Join us on Wednesday 3rd of April at 6:30 PM at CFO for an archeology conference by Dr Anaïs Marrast, Teaching and Research Associate, about the “Sohar Project”.
Sohar held great importance as a city and port during medieval times, particularly in the Abbasid period. Its prominence dates back to the early Islamic period (8th-9th centuries AD), where it stood at the convergence of numerous trade routes, linking it to various destinations such as China, Yemen, India, East Africa, and Iraq. Despite its rich historical legacy, little evidence of this past remains visible today.
The Sohar Project has recently started its inaugural campaign aimed at delving into the history of the fortress over the next five years. A multidisciplinary team comprising experts in GIS, cultural material studies, bioarchaeology, and environmental studies has been assembled to uncover the origins of Sohar’s history. This presentation offers an initial glimpse into the project’s findings.
